Chickens Flew the Coop!

You thought I would have a hilarious story about runaway chickens.  Not in real life, but in Morgan's imagination!

Here's Morgan's story from about a month ago.  She and Alie wrote it while Brian and I drove a moving truck.  I think they had much more fun than we did.  Enjoy!

Chickens and Their Adventure to Denver
By Morgan Boring

One day, four medium chickens named Granny, Ginger, and the Twins packed up their eggs and flew to Denver in their coop.  Ginger was scared because they could not pick the coop up.  Everybody else was excited.  Once Morgan, Sadie, Alie and Tyler came out, Ginger said, "Help up pick up our coop."  Tyler, Alie, Morgan and Sadie lift it up.  All the chickens flew away.  The end.

It's Conference Time!

The girls were supposed to both come home with a conference packet this week from Primary. Some how, only one made it home, so I went online to find Morgan's packet so she and Sadie could both have one.  Here are the links to the scriptures4kids site packets.

I also found this journal page and thought it was a cool idea.  If I ever have the chance to sit through conference uninterrupted....

Random Activities

Last Wednesday, we went to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (aka, the Wild Animal Park) with my sister, Alie, and Baby Jack.  I remember climbing on this rhinoceros when I was a little kid.  It's fun to watch my kids make those same memories.

Sadie asked Carson to babysit for her the other day.  Can't you tell he was thrilled to help?  I don't think he shares the same enthusiasm of caring for "my baby" as Sadie does.

My parents' street has quite a few kids on it and every few weeks, they block of the cul-de-sac and let the kids ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards while the parents enjoy a potluck and chat.  Morgan only got to go for a few minutes, but she can't wait to go ride bikes with the big kids again!

Carson loves his play mat!  He's starting to bat at some of the toys hanging.  It's so much fun to watch him learn new things!  (Now, if he could only learn to put himself to sleep...)

We're loving CA!

Carson's been smiling for about 3 weeks now, but I'm just now getting pictures posted.  Enjoy!

The End...sort of

Aspen Grove, August 2011

I have been thinking about posting the story of our relocation to California all summer long, but it just didn't make sense until everything was done.  And, even now, as I'm writing this, it's still not over.  But, it's as over as it'll be for at least a few more months.   I'm writing all the details for my own journaling, but I'll bold the important details, if you want a quick read.

When we bought our house in 2007, the plan was to stay for about 5 years.  Morgan wasn't even born yet, so we weren't concerned about schools.  Then, once we moved in, we began talking with different people and found out about a few schools in the area that were good.  So, when the economy turned sour in 2008/2009, we weren't too concerned because we had school options.  By this time, we had realized that we didn't want to be in Colorado long term, but would put Morgan in a good school, and just wait for the economy to turn around.

This past year, we applied to 5 different charter schools out in our area, thinking that Morgan would be accepted to at least one.  By early April, we had heard from all 5.  Morgan was not accepted to any of the schools.  We prayed about our current dilemma and felt strongly that Morgan was not to go to school in Colorado.  In fact, I remember we were at "the park Megan showed us" (Morgan's official title) when I said to Brian, "What do we do?"  and he confidently replied, "We're moving."  (Note:  that's definitely NOT a Brian thing to say.  He and I both always have a plan, and follow it precisely.  We rarely don't just act without reason, especially on big things, like moving 3 states away!)  And so begins the story of summer 2011.

Now that we had decided to move, we needed to actually do something about it.  We knew this whole process would require a lot of faith and trust in the Lord's timing, not ours.  He always has a better plan, and, looking back, his plan turned out to be better than any we could have made!

The day after we decided to move, I started looking into renting our house and Brian started looking into the Southern California job market.  Two days later, we had found someone to rent our house.  The whole situation kind of fell into our laps.  Normally, this would be crazy to rent out your house before finding a new place/job.  But, it felt right, so we signed a contract and prepared to move out mid-June.

Meanwhile, back on the job front, Brian arranged to transfer within his company down to Irvine.  However, it wouldn't be until the end of the summer.  Unfortunately for us, this meant that we needed to find another place in Colorado to live until then.  We were fortunate to find an apartment complex willing to give us a short-term (we were only there 10 weeks) lease.  However, the timing was such that we moved the first time (into an apartment) when I was 34 weeks pregnant!

As moving out of our house and my due date quickly approached, I panicked about going into labor.  I went so fast with Sadie, I wouldn't have time to take the girls up to a friend's house and then drive back to the hospital in time.  My mom wasn't able to come out, and she suggested I talk to my new RS president as soon as we moved.  But, I felt awkward moving into a ward with a loaded plate of "service opportunities" for others to fulfill.   Plus, would my girls feel comfortable being dropped off at some stranger's (to them, not me!) house while I went to the hospital?

Enter in another blessing from our Heavenly Father!  Our neighbors just across the hall in our complex (like you can open our door and theirs and see into each others' homes) ended up being Morgan's Primary teachers!  Plus, they have a little boy Sadie's age, so we got together to play often!  We were saved!  {In fact, when I did go into labor (in the middle of the night), Brian just brought the baby monitor to Charlotte with a key to our place and off we went!  Plus, because I did go so fast, he was home from the hospital before they even woke up the next morning!}

Four short weeks after Carson was born, we got ready to move again!  We first went to a family reunion in Utah, and then drove on to California from there.  Morgan started kindergarten and we started getting settled into my parents' house.  Since Brian's official transfer date was September 1st, he flew back to Denver to work for about a week and then I flew back to pack up and ride down in a moving truck with him.  Labor Day weekend, we officially moved to California.

It has now been two weeks and we're starting to get into some sort of a routine.  We're so grateful for my parents' willingness to let us stay with them until we figure things out.  We're not quite sure what the Lord has planned for our future, so stay tuned for more updates!

California or Bust!!

We made it!  Still trying to put life together, but we're here, in California!  We know this is the right decision for our family and are anxious to see what's in store for us in Sunny Cali!

Here's a few update pictures:

Morgan always wants to hold her little brother.  She says, "He's such a cute boy!"

Our first 2 weeks here, we had an even fuller house.  Alie, Tyler, and Baby Jack were getting ready to move out, into their own place.  But, until they did, we improvised for sleeping arrangements.  Sadie napped on the couch (actually didn't fall off, despite what it looks like in the picture).

Carson slept in the hall and wore a burp cloth over his face to block the lights.  He was right at the top of the stairs and all of us were going up and down while he slept!

What's a Summer evening without homemade ice cream?  We enjoyed the fruits of our labors.

The girls re-friended (is that a term??) the chickens.  Here they are, feeding the ladies and Ginger yogurt and oatmeal.

Here's Carson with Grammy Tammy.

Some nights, the girls had a slumber party in the loft.  I don't know how this could possibly be comfortable for either kid!

Morgan's first day of Kindergarten: August 30, 2011.

Carson loves the bathtub!  (Thanks, Jones family!)

Brian started working this past Tuesday, and, unfortunately, has yet to spend less than 3 hours in the car each day.  Going up to Irvine, he's hit traffic at 7 am on Tuesday, 6:30 am Wednesday (Marines must report on base at 7 am, we think), cruised right up at 6 am on Thursday, but it took over 2 1/2 hours coming home, due to the county-wide power outage that spread into Arizona! Friday, he seemed to time it pretty well, so we think if he leaves at 6 am and 3:55 pm, he shouldn't have too much trouble (only about 55 min - 1 hr each way).  Wish him luck (and safety!)!

Writing Alligator

Morgan came home from school last week with a letter that I thought I'd pass along:

Hi Mom and Dad,

Writing takes lots of muscles that I might not have used much.  This simple clothespin can help me exercise my "writing muscles" (i.e. developing fine motor skills).  All I have to do is use my pointer finger and thumb to open and close it over and over.  (Make the "alligator" mouth go chomp, chomp, chomp.)  I need to be sure not to sneak any other fingers to help, though!  That way I do a really good job working the right muscles.  We've been practicing this at school.  If you could remind me to practice at home, too, that would help me develop my writing skills.  Thanks!

Love,
Morgan

Chef's Special

I'm WAY, WAY, WAY behind on my posts! Moving to California has been quite the experience! So, until I get to the rest of it, please enjoy Chef Lady Sadie Bugger's Special of the Day, circa 1 month ago:

Boy, Time Flies!!

I can't believe our little guy is already 3 weeks old!!  How easily we forget what life was like before. I can't imagine our life without this precious baby!

Carson spends most of his time sleeping.  (That is, after all, what newborns do best!)  Aside from his fussy time around dinner (perfect timing, right?), he's mostly tolerant of his big sisters and their never ending affection.

The girls wanted to watch Carson's "first" (don't tell them it's not really) bath.  Sadie kept saying, "Oh. He's getting cleaned," over and over.

Sadie's turned into our early riser.  While we're usually up before her (Brian at work, me feeding a baby), I usually leave Carson on the bed while I get dressed.  Sadie loves to climb up and cuddle him.  Her favorite is to give him "nose-ies" (i.e. Eskimo kisses).  This morning she said, "Ooh!  His nose is cold, Mom!"

These past several weeks, we've attended Brian's softball games.  His company plays in a city league every summer.  While I can't take credit for the pictures (thanks, Mark!), here's my stud in action!

Here he is waiting for some softball action!

This picture reminds me of my little sisters at my brother's little league games.  They would play in the dirt the whole time, and, every inning (actually half-inning), Debbie Schroeder or my mom would give them each a single M & M (okay, maybe it was a few, but that doesn't sound as good) and back to the dirt they'd go!  I'm sure they came home even more filthy than the players!

We're going on vacation this weekend and then to California after, but the computer won't be coming until September, so be patient and expect lots of posts in a few weeks!

The Past 2 Weeks...

...have been kind of a blur.  Somehow, we've all managed to make it through alive, but, other than that, I don't really recall a whole lot!  Here's a few pictures to enjoy!

This kid has long limbs!  And, with how skinny they are, it's hard to believe he was almost 9 pounds at birth!

Just chillin' in bed.  And, don't be fooled by the round, chubby looking face.

"Look, Mom!  Carson has a hippo on his bum!"

Morgan, the ever-attentive big sister.   This kid's never going to get away with anything--ever!

Daddy with his kiddos!
